CFD calculations for a hydro power plant

End of 2012, computational fluid dynamics’ simulations (3D-CFD) were realised for a hydro power plant in Romania.

The hydro power plant has 3 parallel EOS-700 turbines (bulb turbines with one fixed and one variable blade position with a nominal diameter of 700 mm) and is part of an extensive power plant park consisting of different sizes of EOS turbines. As part of a refurbishment project the hydraulic contour of one set of machinery has been digitalised by means of a 3D surface scan, prepared for computational fluid dynamics; and as a result the hydro power plant could be analysed in detail.

CFD simulations hydropower plant: efficiency

In the course of CFD simulations for the hydro power plant the moderate efficiency of the plant supposed in advance has been illustrated and the optimisation potential has been deduced. Furthermore, an efficiency shell of the plant has been calculated which shows; what the efficiencies to be expected at other EOS-700 locations with other operational data are and for which of these hydro power plant sites optimisation is of major and of minor importance..

By means of plant measurements at different EOS-700 power plant locations the results of the simulations could be confirmed and the number of hydro power plants to be optimised could be limited.
