Development of new turbine hydraulics for a hydro power plant

Based on the calculation results of the project “CFD calculations for a hydro power plant” new, semi-regulated Kaplan turbine hydraulics for an EOS-700 turbine were developed. As part of the refurbishment works, these shall first be installed in the examined power plant and later on also at other EOS-700 sites.

Improved efficiency and cavitation behaviour of turbine by CFD

As the outer diameter of the engine as well as the hub area and the draft tube shall not be modified, new guide vane as well as runner blade designs were developed which led to tremendous growth in efficiency and improved cavitation behaviour.

Turbine hydraulic efficiency

By developing new hydraulics not only the top efficiency could be increased by 8 per cent, but also the part load behaviour could be ameliorated. By means of an additional improvement of the turbine’s sigma curve it is now possible to operate individual plants with lower tailwater levels. Furthermore, there are considerations – based on the promising calculation results – to apply different runner blade positions, each held constant, for the parallel Kaplan turbines at the site examined in order to optimise the annual output.
